There's an episode of Firefly, my favourite Sci-Fi series, where one of the main characters volunteers to complete a task that, if failed, will result in him slowly suffocating on an empty ship.
One of the other characters says:
"Mal, you don't have to die alone."
Mal responds, "Everyone dies alone."
That line always seemed simultaneously incredibly sad and incredibly true.
Always depresses the hell out of me when I'm reminded of it.
